What is MikuMikuMoving?

MikuMikuMoving(MMM) is kind of the next generation of MikuMikuDance(MMD). Much easier to use, especially for english users.

MikuMikuDance(MMD) is a very small and free 3D animation tools for catoon animations.

It’s realtime rendering, and  you don’t need to build model, you can just download free beatiful models, motions and even camera motions, then put them together to make a nice animation video in a few minutes!!

But MMD is a Japanese Software and is very hard to use in many ways. There will be a lot of problems if you use it under English environment.

MikuMikuMoving is based on .Net tech from Microsoft, fixed most shits of MMD, make everything just much easier. And you still can use all the free models and motions from MMD’s world.

Following are what the guy in this video does:

1. Load a charactor model

2. Load Music and charactor motion data

3. Find out his music is not fit the animation, so move the start point of his music.

4. Load camera motion

5. Load a skydome as dance stage

6. Try to use an effect he don’t know how to use, then give up and remove it….

7. Add some effects he does know how to use.

8. Save the whole scene as a project file and reload it.

9. Some small adjust, then finished.

If you don’t try something you don’t know, or, at least read a manual before trying...you can finish everything above in 2 minutes.

About Model

=============================

There are 3 model formats in MikuMikuMoving:

1. (Model Name).pmx

Most models are .pmx files. This format is created by MMD’s author, nothing spccial, just a format.

2. .pmd

An old format of .pmx, most people don’t use it any more, it’s already been replaced by .pmx

3. .x

It’s a world wide 3d model format, which don’t has any bone. So it’s only can be use as accessory, stage, building or a surface for displaying some effects.

Free .x stage download:

All the stage models of Google’s free 3D warehouse can be convert into .x file by Sketchup(google’s 3d tool, there is a free version) easily. Then you can use them in MikuMikuMoving.

About Motion Data

1. .vmd

.vmd file is MMD’s motion data for both charactor, camera and light. It’s the main format for now.

MMD can load/save this format too.

2. .mvd

.mvd file is a motion format created by the author of MMM. It can only be used in MMM. MMD won’t open it.

It’s better than .vmd as it can save mutiple layers of motion data. But you basically can’t find any .mvd data for downloading. People just don’t share .mvd file since most Japanese guys are still using MMD.

About music

=============================

Most MMD and MMM videos are music dancing videos. Which means you need a music and it must fit the motion data you just downloaded.

Most people get the music by this way:

1. Go to the video page where they find the motion data download link.

2. Download that video and convert it into .mp3 or .wav.

3. Use it in MMM/MMD.

I’m not telling you to break a rule or a law, I’m just telling you a truth. What is also a truth is:

Music authors treat MMD/MMM dance videos as a good way for promotion, so they allow people using their music to make animation dance videos. And if they don’t, you won’t find a motion data download link at the beginning.

About Effect (also called as MME)

=============================

First of all, you need to know, the default rendering result is bad in both MMD and MMM. But, by adding a shader effct to model, you can make it much more like in a real pro 3D tool in a few minutes.

1. .fx

.fx file is the effect format for MMD, and some .fx effect can also be used in MMM. It’s depence in the code of this effect.

2. .fxm

.fxm file is the effect format only for MMM.

Important: Difference between effects of MMD and MMM

MMD don’t has an effect function. Applying an effect must through a plugin called MME. Which makes most effects are very very hard to use. For English environment, many effects won’t even work.

(For example , to change a color, you may need to open the .fx file and change the code by yourself. To use an effect, you may need to load a lot files into your scene and know exactly how to use each file of them. That’s painful.)

But, since most Japanese guys are using MMD, it has more effects available than MMM.

MMM has a build in effect system, much more easy to use than MMD’s. And there is no problem for English users.

(For example: You can just drag your mouse to adjust very effect like other real professional 3D tools. And you only need one effect file for each effect.)

Most popular MMD effects have their MMM versions (as a .fxm file). 
But there are also some new effects still don’t have a MMM version.
